How to add page numbers to a PDF without Acrobat
Organize the PDF before numbering it, then choose a clear position and starting value. This avoids having to rebuild page numbers after a later merge or reorder.
Add Page Numbers to PDF
When PDF page numbers help
Scanned documents, exported slides and merged PDFs often have no continuous numbering. Page numbers make printed pages easier to restore and let readers refer to a precise location during review.
A PDF may already show chapter numbers that do not match its actual file order. You can add a second, simple sequence for navigation, but place it where it will not overlap existing text.
Add page numbers step by step
- Check the page order first. Rotate, remove or reorder pages before numbering.
- Open the PDF page-number tool and add the document.
- Choose a header or footer position: left, center or right.
- Select a plain number or a current-page/total-pages format.
- Set the starting value, process the file and download a new copy.
- Inspect the first, middle and final pages for overlap and correct numbering.
Starting numbers and total pages
The first number does not have to be 1. If an appendix follows a 20-page document, start it at 21. A ten-page appendix using the current/total format would then finish at 30/30.
The current version numbers every page. If a cover must remain unnumbered, split it off, number the body, and merge the cover and body again.
Will selectable text be preserved?
JustFileKit adds page-number objects to the PDF instead of rendering every page as an image. Existing selectable text should therefore remain selectable, and the entire document is not rasterized just to add numbering.
Keep the source PDF and save the result as a new file. Forms, permissions and certificate-based signatures deserve extra care because any content change can invalidate an existing digital signature.
Choose a readable position
| Document | Suggested position | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| General report | Bottom center | Easy to find and consistent |
| Two-sided print | Outside bottom edge | Visible while flipping pages, but requires odd/even placement |
| Existing footer | Top right | Less likely to cover footer content |
| Scanned pages | Side with more whitespace | Avoids stamps and handwriting |
